1. Protect yourself from the sun

One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer.
For the most complete sun protection:
  • Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. When you're outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours — or more often if you're swimming or perspiring.
  • Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are strongest.
  • Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Also consider laundry additives, which give clothing an additional layer of ultraviolet protection for a certain number of washings, or special sun-protective clothing — which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays.

  • Avoid strong soaps. Strong soaps and detergents can strip oil from your skin. Instead, choose mild cleansers.
  • Shave carefully. To protect and lubricate your skin, apply shaving cream, lotion or gel before shaving. For the closest shave, use a clean, sharp razor. Shave in the direction the hair grows, not against it.
  • Pat dry. After washing or bathing, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on your skin.
  • Moisturize dry skin. If your skin is dry, use a moisturizer that fits your skin type. For daily use, consider a moisturizer that contains SPF.

4. Eat a healthy diet

A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. We've all been there - you're just getting ready for that big life-changing moment (insert: date/job interview/wedding day as appropriate) and you look in the mirror to find that you've got huge white spots on your face. What exactly are they and what's the best way to get rid of spots?

What Are Spots?

Spots are part of a condition called acne, which affects up to 95% of the western adolescent population. There is no real difference between spots and acne, but some people classify spots as a few breakouts on the skin, whereas acne is more serious and widespread, and is found on the face, chest, back, shoulders and even buttocks.
A spot is the blockage of a gland near the surface of the skin called a sebaceous gland. These glands secrete a substance called sebum, which is an oily substance used to lubricate the hair follicle. Occasionally they can become blocked by excess sebum which mixes with dead skin cells at the opening of the gland, resulting in a blackhead. If bacteria living on the surface of the skin works its way into the blocked gland, the area can become red, swollen and produce a white pus, which result in those whiteheads.
Spots can be caused by hormonal changes such as those at puberty, around your period or during pregnancy. There is also a strong link between increased breakouts and stress, as stress can trigger fluctuations in hormone levels. This is why we always seem to suffer a breakout just before that big event.

Spot Treatment

There are many over-the-counter spot treatments available claiming to treat or reduce the severity of spots. More severe cases may require a trip to a GP or dermatologist (opens in a new window) to prescribe something stronger, like a topical antibiotic or product containing benzoyl peroxide, which has a gentle drying and peeling effect on skin.

However, natural spot treatments are cheap and easy to use. Tea tree oil is a fantastic anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory treatment. Apply it very sparingly to the spot - dilute it with a bit of water first as it's highly concentrated and could irritate your skin. Rosewater is also naturally anti-inflammatory and the aroma of rose has been used for centuries to lift spirits and ease stress and tension.
If you frequently suffer from spots, especially around the mouth and chin, it is advisable to seek the advice of a health professional. Squeezing Spots

Don't squeeze spots if they're red and have no head. Squeezing spots can actually make things worse by driving bacteria deeper under the skin and, in some cases, can lead to scarring.
Some experts recommend that if the spot has come to a noticeable white head you can squeeze it, but make sure your hands are very clean (wrap your fingers in tissue to prevent your nails damaging your skin). Pop a bit of tea tree oil or an antiseptic cream on top of the squeezed spot to make sure it stays clean.

Preparation

Start by cleansing your skin, then apply your homemade face mask, leave on for up to 10 minutes, rinse-off with warm water, gently pat skin dry and apply usual moisturiser.

Face Mask for Dry Skin

Avocados boast moisturising properties from vitamin E, essential fatty acids omega-9 and omega-6 (which aid skin and tissue growth and keep skin supple), and chlorophyll (the nutritious green stuff in plants), which helps regenerate our skin cells. It's also easily absorbed, which makes it ideal for dry skin.
Method: Mash-up a ripe avocado. Add a teaspoon of runny honey (which is super-hydrating too), blend the ingredients and apply to face.

Face Mask for Combination Skin

"Bananas contain highly-moisturising agents which make the skin flexible, pliable and super-soft when applied topically. But they are also non-oily so they're good for combination skins," says Helen Ambrosen of Lush (opens in a new window). "Peaches remove any excess sebum (oil) by softening the sebum, so it can leave the follicles with ease, and without stripping skin. Honey is excellent for skin that's prone to breakouts, as it reduces redness of pimples and dries them-up, thanks to its concentration of sugar solution, which withdraws moisture from pimples." Add some ground almonds, to polish the skin and remove dead surface cells - two tablespoons should do it.
Method: Blend two bananas, two tablespoons of honey and two stoned and peeled peaches. Add the ground almonds, mix-up and blend again. Finally add a small handful of rolled porridge oats, to bind mixture together. Apply to face.

Face Mask for Oily Skin

"If your skin is spot-prone, try a plum and yoghurt mask," says Sarah Stacey of the Green Beauty Bible (opens in a new window). "Plums contain vitamins A and C (known as anti-oxidants), which fight-off free radical activity, strengthen skin's elasticity and general appearance." Both these vitamins are often used in anti-acne and oil-control style skin care products. Stacey adds, "Plain yoghurt is an excellent skin hydrator, packed with lactic acid which aids sloughing of dead skin cells and increases cellular turnover."
Method: Poach four fresh plums, strain really well and leave to cool. Mash-up and blend with one or two tablespoons of plain yoghurt, a teaspoon of sweet almond oil (which contains anti-microbial properties to help prevent spread of the bacteria responsible for acne) and some cornflower to thicken and bind mixture (make to suit) and apply to face. Warning ladies, this one gets a bit messy!

Plain old butter is an excellent source of vitamin A, so grab the (unsalted) butter from the fridge and leave it out for a few hours until it warms up to room temperature.     Use honey and cinnamon. Honey is a natural antibiotic and works to pull out dirt from your open pores. Mix a tablespoon of honey with ½ a teaspoon of cinnamon and use your fingers to dab it onto your dry skin. Rub it in a circular motion for three minutes and then wash off with warm water.

    Try an egg-white mask. Egg whites help to tighten pores and pull out any clogged dirt giving you smooth, clear skin. Remove the yolks from two eggs and smear it into a thin layer over your face. Give it two minutes to dry, and then add the remaining whites in a second layer. Give the complete mask an additional 10-15 minutes to dry, or until the whites are smooth to the touch and your skin feels tight. Use warm water to rinse the whites off your face.

There are many different kinds of cosmetic clay available to purchase in a powdered form, each with the specialized property of drying out oily pores and removing unwanted residue. So what is the best acne treatment for men? After having a lot of experience fighting acne myself using products such as AcneFree, Proactiv and Clearasil creams, the best acne treatment I discovered is actually not an acne treatment at all. I found that one of the biggest reasons people get acne is because of the foods you eat, such as heavily greasy junk food and highly processed foods tend to cause acne.
What I did was try out a combination of things such as detoxifying my body with fruit blends, as instructed in Acne No More. I did this for a week, and I had good results. But I still had some pimples, so I set out to get rid of these red marks once and for all. What I did next was a variation of all-natural solutions and over-the-counter creams which I then discovered what the best acne treatment for men consists of.
One method I implemented was washing my face and then applying a very light amount of all-natural almond oil over the pimples, and then about 1 minute later I applied a general acne cream I got from the drugstore.
